Job summary
The Tax Storage Platform team is looking for a talented and enthusiastic Support Engineer who is passionate about operations excellence and interested in raising the bar on how we maintain, operate and scale our tools and services to support Amazon's business, globally.

As a Support Engineer, you will be considered a technical subject matter expert for tools and services within the team. Our services include multiple, massively scale-able distributed systems that provide inexpensive, reliable, global tax calculation results storage platform in Amazon. You should be somebody who enjoys working on solving problems, are customer-centric, and feels strongly not only about operations but also about running systems and software in the real world. You must enjoy a close-knit team environment of shared responsibility. The ideal candidate will have strong distributed systems and Linux/Unix design, networking, implementation and engineering experience. You will be working on real hardware, but with plenty of opportunity to develop software using the latest AWS technologies to move our business forward. As a member of the team, you will be guiding team members from multiple disciplines to provide solutions that meet cost and availability needs for our customers.

Key job responsibilities
  • Own Tier-1 Service's preparation for Amazon high volume events including base-lining service performance, and planning for hardware and software needs.
  • Design and build tools to improve overall service availability and operational stability.
  • Collaborate with development teams to support Full Continuous Deployment of tier 1/tier 2 services.
  • Improve service resiliency by managing security, availability and other risks.
  • Own Infrastructure planning for all services on the team, exploring efficiency opportunities across various products/platforms.
  • Own the initiatives to reduce operational burden and improve the quality of resolution to customer contacts.
  • Own and operate the entire production operational space including monitoring , alarming , dashboard generation, documentation and other engineering excellence areas.
  • Collaborate with service teams on design reviews, to make the product platform robust.

About the team

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience scripting in modern program languages
  • 4+ years of development or technical support experience
  • Experience in Unix
  • Experience troubleshooting and debugging technical systems

  • 4+ years of experience working in either technical support, software/systems development including:
  • 4+ years experience performing work within a Unix ecosystem - troubleshooting issues, scripting using either Shell or Perl.
  • 4+ year experience performing in at least one of the following programming languages Java, Ruby, Python.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem solving skills.
  • Experience working with distributed systems and/or large-scale web applications.
  • Experience in a 24/7 production environment.
  • Basic understanding of networking concepts.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical teams.


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Proven ability to troubleshoot and identify the root cause of issues, experience working with data stores [RDS or otherwise] and distributed computing technologies.
  • Demonstrates skill and passion for operational excellence - must be able to see opportunities for improvement, take ownership and closely work with development team to drive product improvement.
  • Ability to work in a fast paced and agile development environment.
  • Exposure to modern database technologies and experience with AWS products is a plus.
