Indigenous-Specific Anti-Racism and Reconciliation, and Patient Care Quality
Ministry of Health
Various Locations in BC
B.C.'s health system carries important responsibilities to uphold Indigenous rights and advance reconciliation. These responsibilities are rooted not only in international, national, and provincial law, and in federal and provincial government commitments, but also in the call to build stronger, more respectful relationships with Indigenous peoples. For senior executive leaders, reconciliation is a core and ongoing responsibility, one that requires listening with openness, learning with humility, and leading with integrity.
The Assistant Deputy Minister (ADM), Indigenous-Specific Anti-Racism, Reconciliation, and Patient Care Quality provides executive leadership over the ministry's Indigenous-specific anti-racism, reconciliation, cultural safety, and patient care quality portfolios.
The ADM provides leadership for the Ministry's system stewardship role, ensuring commitments under the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (DRIPA), Truth and Reconciliation Commission Calls to Action, In Plain Sight recommendations, and other Indigenous-specific commitments are translated into action across the health system. This includes providing provincial leadership and system accountability for cultural humility, anti-racism, and reconciliation practices across the health system. The ADM also leads the Patient Care Quality portfolio, ensuring that these accountabilities are integrated with health authority operations, ministry accountability frameworks, and broader health system governance.
The ideal candidate is an experienced senior leader with significant recent experience at a senior management or executive level, within a complex, politically sensitive environment. They have a comprehensive understanding of today's health care system from an Indigenous patient care perspective. A natural communicator and deft, trustworthy relationship-builder, this candidate has facilitated substantial successes with a wide range of interest-holders and partners including Health Authorities and First Nations representatives.
In recognition of the critical importance to this role of a lived understanding of Indigenous communities, history, values, legal orders, and cultural competencies, and in accordance with Section 42 of the BC Human Rights Code, only Indigenous individuals (First Nations, Métis, and/or Inuit) with the required combination of education and experience will be considered for this opportunity. Please confirm you meet this requirement in your cover letter.
A complete role description and listing of qualifications is attached. The appointee will be required to consent to a criminal record check.
The BC Public Service is committed to creating a diverse workplace to reflect the population we serve and to better meet the needs of our citizens. Consider joining our executive team and being part of an innovative, inclusive, and rewarding organization.
